Can you remember who you are when the world told you who you should be?

There seems to be a need to be someone that the rest of the world thinks you should be. Whether it’s due to stereotypes or other factors people see people and portray them to be something else. And because they see them to be something or someone else we automatically steer toward what they see us to be. And when we become someone we aren’t? Well, we seem to get lost in translation. Sometimes we just forget who we are and what we are meant to be. Then we begin to regret things.

There will always be things that we wish we did differently. If only I did this. Or, if only I did that. If I said this differently. Or, if I thought this out differently. We tend to spend so much time in our lives thinking and trying to change our past. Our biggest regret seems to be trying to change a past that has already been written in stone for and by us. But, why? Why not focus on a present and future that hasn’t been written?

You should be happy. Whatever you are doing you shouldn’t look at your past and say, “Crud I seriously messed up there and screwed my entire life. If I did it this way I’d be the one with the window seat on the 30th floor.” Instead, you should look at your past and say, “There was some crazy crap going on there but this is what I learned.” Many people don’t do that. Shoot, I don’t do that. So how do we fix that? By reclaiming our life.

Best way to reclaim your life? Stop with the negatives. Get rid of the should have mentality. Stop thinking you should be able to do this, or say that, or think this because of that. Stop wondering why you shouldn’t be anxious due to these circumstances because society would think you’re crazy. It’s ok to be anxious. Look for reasons why it’s ok to be in a situation where you are in a bit of a panic and find why you’ll come out of it. Those will be your strengths.

How else? Accept yourself for who you are instead of where you are in the standard of where people see you. You don’t have to be anything they want you to be. What you have to do is be something, someone you want yourself to be. How can you find yourself if you are pretending to be the somebody that you aren’t? All the quirks and dysfunctions that make you you also makes you special. Just because you are different doesn’t make you an outcast. Being unique is not a bad thing. Who wants to walk the same path as everyone else? That wouldn’t be fun. How would you find adventure if you’re already walking the beaten path and following footsteps?

Finally, be happy. Okay, I’m not telling you that everything in your life you should be happy about. I’d be a hypocrite if I was telling you that. Bad things happen to good people and because of it we can get a little down in the dumps. What I am telling you is that no matter what is going on in your life – the good, the bad, and the ugly – just be happy, look for the good in the situation. There is always a good. I promise. If you were late for work and you are rushing and frustrated that your day had to start this way, be thankful that you got to wake up at all. If you get the flu and you’re stuck in bed, be thankful it’ll pass and you aren’t terminally ill. If you didn’t get the promotion that you were promised, be thankful that you have the chance to prove your self worth and prove them wrong.

You see, reclaiming your life isn’t always about smiles and sunshine. Life isn’t always about sugar sweet rainbows and long stem roses. Rather it is the accumulation of all the good and the bad, taking that good and bad and knowing who you are through it all. Reclaiming your life isn’t about the opinions of how others see you. Don’t ever be afraid to show the real you. As long as you are happy with yourself, how others see you is irrelevant. But, you have to be able to find your strength and get through it all. No one can reclaim your life but you. You have the power to be what you want. You have the power to be as successful as you can be. Will there be bumps, bruises, scratches and hills to climb? Damn straight there will be. But, you are strong enough to dust off the dirt and climb that mountain. I believe in you. You can do it. I will kick anyone in the knees that says you can’t. Because, you can.

It is a work in progress but I’m reclaiming my life. Will you reclaim yours with me? Today is the first day of the rest of your life. So claim it.
